Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular region is relatively common in the population of individuals over age 18. This is generally distinguished by pain or tenderness of the temporomandibular joint and surrounding muscles, which may result in the following symptoms:

  • Biting or chewing difficulty or discomfort
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sound when opening or closing the mouth
  • Migraine (particularly in the morning)
  • Jaw pain or tenderness of the jaw
  • Reduced ability to open or close the mouth
  • Tinnitus (ringing or sound in within the ear)
  • Dull, aching pain in the face
  • Earache
  • Headache
  • Hearing loss

For a lasting relief from the pain and discomfort of TMJ, physical therapy has been proven to provide positive long-term results. Our clinic specializes in the treatment of TMJ through the use of manual techniques such as myofascial release, joint mobilizations, and strengthening of postural and jaw muscles to help decrease and prevent the return of any symptoms.
